The tower was requisitioned by the Wehrmacht, who also installed the only television transmitter operating in Europe during the war, the Fernsehsender Paris, to communicate with the troops. The broadcasts, mainly in French, were intended for wounded German servicemen in local hospitals. The Germans placed a beam of light in the tower to guide aircraft at night. After escaping Hitler's planned destruction in 1944, it came under Allied control at the Liberation, and the Americans installed a radar system.
