The Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 were not the only amphibious assault launched by the Anglo-Americans during the Second World War. Whilst Normandy was not a first for the Allies, it was undoubtedly the most complex and delicate military operation they had ever undertaken. Lasting three months, the battle that followed the landings was one of the fiercest and costliest for the Allies. After heavy sacrifices, the Allied coalition emerged victorious, with America at its helm. Thus, by demonstrating the supremacy of the United States, the Battle of Normandy already heralded the post-war world.
