Delayed for the first time on June 4, 1944, due to bad weather, General Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces, set the date for Operation Overlord for June 6. Whatever the weather conditions, June 6, 1944 was to be D-Day for the Normandy landings, with thousands of tons of bombs being dropped on the coast from the night of June 5 to 6. The human toll of the Battle of Normandy was very high, including for civilians.
