The aim of Operation Overlord was to open up a new front in Western Europe to relieve the Red Army, which had been fighting Germany since 1941. From the landings on the beaches of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword on the night of 5 to 6 June 1944, to the liberation of Le Havre on 12 September, it took the Allied troops almost 100 days of fighting to liberate Normandy and open the way to Berlin. This battle remains one of the most important of the Second World War and one of the greatest logistical operations to date.
