Delayed for the first time on June 4, 1944, due to bad weather, Operation Overlord was set for June 6 by General Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied troops. Whatever the weather conditions, June 6 1944 proved to be D-Day for the Normandy landings, with thousands of tons of bombs being dropped on the coast from the night of June 5 to 6. The human toll of the Battle of Normandy was very heavy, including for civilians.
