Utah Beach is one of the two landing beaches planned for the Americans on D-Day. Its existence as the only assault sector in the Cotentin region was the result of an operational choice made by British General Bernard Montgomery, who wanted to establish a bridgehead directly in the Cotentin region in order to seize Cherbourg and its precious deep-water port more quickly.
